Spring 1998: 44 Ailments Took Me Down a Dark Path

I’m not sure when I first became hooked on sweets or carbs, but in 1998, my Crazy Cravings for sweets (like red licorice and hard candies in many flavors) and processed carbs (such as popcorn and small wheat crackers) made me careen out of control.

When I was hit by stress, deadlines or frustrations, I desperately “needed” to lean on (or “use”) my favorite sugary snacks or processed carb “treats,” which, of course, turn to sugar.

Sugar was like cocaine to me…only far more addictive. (That’s what the research shows.)

Eventually, a whopping 44 baffling ailments besieged me, including crushing headaches, difficulty concentrating, severe PMS, massive brain fog, tremendous anxiety, embarrassing mood swings, and frightening heart palpitations.

Woo Hoo! How I Became “Reborn” After Kicking Sugar & Processed Carbs

Desperate to feel better, I went to a new doctor, who diagnosed low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

“Quit sugary foods and processed carbohydrates,” my M.D. recommended.

I was understandably upset. And by “upset” I mean DEVASTATED.

How could I give up my favorite chocolates, hard candies, and chips, which I often needed?

Then my doctor dished the bitter truth.

“If you don’t kick sugar and processed carbs, you’ll only suffer more and more as time goes on, and you’ll probably die at a young age.”

Yikes! That shook me up.

I didn’t want to die early or continue to feel so awful!

Reluctantly, I followed my doctor’s dreaded advice.

I kicked sugar and processed carbs, and within days, I became “reborn.”

All 44 symptoms vanished!

Imagine my sheer delight, joy and relief!

Fascinated by my remarkable transformation, I spent years researching sugar’s dangers, interviewing hundreds of people, and writing my first book, Sugar Shock, widely praised by Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Christiane Northrup, Marilu Henner, JJ Virgin, and many others.

It was smooth sailing for the next 14 years, until 2012…

Late 2012: Uh-oh! My Carb Relapse

In late 2012, after I’d eaten “cleanly” (most of the time) for 14 years, Crazy Cravings™—as I now call them—hounded, harassed and haunted me as never before.

In retrospect, Crazy Cravings came on strong after I’d endured the most grueling, stressful, heartbreaking year, helplessly watching my once-polite-and-dignified mother lose the battle to stage 4 cancer.

While reeling and healing from grief, anger and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, my cravings for greasy popcorn and other fatty, salty snacks (not sugar) became downright ferocious, monstrous, and overpowering.

Now it makes perfect sense. There I was, all alone, in another part of the country (after moving for her) with no Mom around.

My constant companions were grief, shock and depression. So I lost my way and paid scant attention to my self-care.

So the awful, agonizing, brutal ordeal of seeing cancer slowly snatch away Mom’s charm and life made Crazy Cravings kick up big time.

Hey, they chased me! Or so it felt.

I became increasingly discouraged and demoralized when a mere five months after losing my mother, I’d gained 21 pounds, and all of my clothes didn’t fit anymore.

The most embarrassing part? I’m a sugar-and-carb expert, for goodness sake!

The ultimate irony is that I was trapped in a cravings-bingeing cycle when my second book, Beyond Sugar Shock, had been out for only a few months.

How Can We Calm Down When Times Get Really Tough?

During my mortifying carb relapse, I dissected (through therapy, tapping, healing workshops, journaling, etc.) why I’d fallen off the clean-carbs wagon when I knew full well the POWER of eliminating sugar and processed carbs. 

Sure, I wasn’t eating sweets, but I knew more than anyone that carbs turn to sugar and therefore can be just as dangerous.

So why had I sunk so low?

Soon, I began to realize that, although my books were full of solid research, scientifically sound conclusions and awesome kick-sugar tactics, they just didn’t offer nearly enough emotional help when times get really tough.

Sure, in a perfect world, we’d all make the best food choices, exercise often, and take ample down time to recharge.

But, life is full of ups and downs and when challenges such as death, divorce or stress strike, it’s easy to forget and neglect self-care.

Overpowered by pain, we often don’t bother to eat right.

Fiber-stripped comfort foods often become our drugs of choice.

For nearly four years, I wrestled with questions such as these:

  • How can we stay Calm, Slim and Strong™ when tough times come calling and sugary, fatty, salty, carb temptations abound?
  • How can we quickly do self-care when life throws us inevitable, painful curve balls?

It dawned on me that although my books, Sugar Shock and Beyond Sugar Shock, were groundbreaking, and they offered substantive insights and cutting-edge, kick-sugar tactics, both books didn’t cover an important piece of the puzzle:
